Satsang at Chinmaya Goverdhan
Poinciana Hindu Mandir
3999 Monterey Road
Kissimmee, Fl. 34758
407-873-2679
Members of the Mandir visited Brahmacharanie Arpita at Chinmaya Goverdhan. Arpitaji is a disciple of Swami Chinmayananda and is an ardent devotee of Bhagwaan Shri Krishna. After the satsang, the group shared in a picnic and some outdoor activities. Chinmaya Goverdhan is situated on 17 acres of gorgeous land in St. Augestine, Florida.
Arpitaji shared about the birth of Baby Krishna. When the environment is conducive and the mind is pure, Krishna will be born in our hearts. Once born, once this awakening takes place, some asuras will pop up and Krishna will go to work destroying (and liberating) them.
First came Putana. She came as a breast nurse - asking to feed the baby Krishna from her breast. She had applied poison to her breast hoping that Krishna will suck the poison and die. Instead, Krishna strangelled her to death - thus liberating her. Putana represents agyaan or ignorance. This ignorance is the source of all of our problems. We fail to understand the real nature of the world and so we misunderstand, then we live a life based on this misunderstanding. The classical example given in Vedanta is that we fail to realize that the rope is a rope. We misunderstand or misapprehend it to be a snake and we run and scream etc. Another example is we fail to apprehend (understand) the post as a post and misapprehend (misunderstand) it to be a ghost. With the correct understanding, or with the removal of our ignorance, we will make the right apprehension (understanding) and the illusory ghost or snake will disappear. With the proper knowledge, our illusions about the world and about our relationships and about ourselves will also disappear. So, Krishna first killed Putana and removed the veil of ignorance from our intellect.
Secondly, Yashoda Maa left Krishna under a cart. An asura, Shakatasura, came and settled in the cart. Krishna kicked the cart, topelling it over, and dispatched that demon. Shakatasura represents materialism. In this world, we put materialism above our spirituality. We cannot go to Mandir because we have to work. Our car and our property means more to us than Bhagwaan. We are not ableto live in the yagna spirit like Bhagwaan meant for us to and everything suffers - including our children and our parents. But, all these materialism can only stand for a limited time before they come collapsing down (like the twin towers or the stock market or the housing market). When Bhagwaan is born in our hearts, the second thing that will happen is that we will have to rearrange our priorities - and put Bhagwaan ahead of materialism and selfish interests. He will help us destroy that demon of materialism - but only if we put him above (not below) our other priorities.
The third asura that arpitaji shared about was Trinaavarta. He came in a subtle form, as the whirlwind and picked Bhagwaan Krishna up into the air. As he was going up and up, Bhagwaan became heavier and heavier, suffocating and strangelling this Trinaavarta. He fell down dead and the baby was unharmed. Trinaavarta represents the turmoil of the mind. Sometimes the mind becomes wild and uncontrollable - like a tornado. It becomes willful, firm and determined. With Bhagwaan's help, this too will be brought under control.
Arpitaji will be with us at the Mandir on Dec 13th 2009 to continue this discussion of the Bhagwatam. It would be really great if you can join us.
In service at His Lotus feet

Tulsie Ramayaan
Shri Durda Devi Yajna
July 10th, 11th and 12th
Krishna Janamashtmi Aug 13th 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Swami Prabodhji at the Mandir -- Aug 16th, 9:30 a.m.- 12 noon
Bhagwaan Shri Raam came to demonstrate Dharma for us. The Gita and the Upinishads tell us about Dharma and the nature of Dharma in glowing terms, but nowhere is it so fully and completely demonstrated as it is in the Raamcharitmanas ot Tulsiedaas's Ramayaan.
Early on, Bhagwaan Tulsiedaas tells us how to embrace this lake of the story of the Lord. In a lot of our scriptures, life is described as a river with two banks - happiness and suffering - and only Bhagwaan can take us across this river. Here however, Bhagwaan Tulsiedaas describes the Ramaayana as a lake - with four banks. On each bank, there must be a ghaat to grant us access to the lake. The 4 ghaats are the four conversations about the Ramaayana that are taking place at almost the same time. On one bank (Kailash), Bhagwaan Shiva is telling the story to Mother Parbatie. Here the conversation is of the nature of Knowledge, so jyaan yoga is being demonstrated. On the other bank, Yagnavalkya Rishi is answering the questions of the sage Bhardawaag. This is taking place is Pryaag and the conversation is of the nature of karma. On the other bank, in the Meru Parbat, Khaagbasundaji is telling the story to Garuda and the other birds. This is of the nature of Bhakti. On the last bank,Chitracoot, Tulsiedaas is telling the story to sant purushas and this is called the deen ghaat - the nature of total surrender - total helplessness and deendence upon Bhagwaan. Hey Bhagwaan, Tulsiedaas says, "You are the friend of the helpless and I am the most helpless of the helpless people. So I have absolute faith that you will help me."
Now if there are ghaats, there must be steps to get down to the water. The seven cantos (sections) of the Ramayaana represents the seven steps.
Bhagwaan Tulsiedaas says that if you want to clean the body, you can swim at the top of the lake and easily accomplish that. However, if you want to find the gems and the treasures scattered throughout this lake, you must dive below the surface and find the deeper meaning. If we dive by ourselves, we may get lost or drowned or hold on to the wrong things. We need an expert guide - someone who has the knowledge AND the experience to lead us -- an enlightened master, an enlightened Guru.
Now, on the banks of this lake there is a mango grove (the mango is a very satvic tree). The flowers of the mango will come from our daily practices and our sadhana. Now, what's the use of flowers that wither and die and do not turn into fruit. The flower will turn into fruit only through knowledge - knowledge of the true meaning of the scriptures and knowledge of the divine Self in all our hearts. Taking it further, what is the use of fruit that has no juice. The juice gets produces out of Bhakti.
So, in one sentence, Bhagwaan Tulsiedaas gives us the entire prescription for our spiritual unfoldment. We must do our sadhana so that the flowers will come, we must strive for a personal knowledge of the Divine so that the flower will turn into fruit and we must awaken the love in our heart so that the fruit will be sweet and juicy.
Let us dedicate ourselves to the feet of the Lord, because as mother Sumintra told Lakshman, that mother who brought a son into the world who is not devoted to the feet of the Lotrd has labored in vain.
Jai Shri Raam

Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue between lord Krishna & warrior prince Arjuna. This is a world famous dialogue – world renowned because it leads an ignorant person from the state of confusion, dejection, etc to a state of enlightenment. We can all easily identify ourselves with him. Also, the Gita, this conversation happens on the battlefield of life – where the student is – where he finds himself - that is where the teachings happen and can happen and must be applied. Arjuna is engulfed in desire, ambition, etc. Like us he is faced with choices, dishonor, insult, achievement, joy, frustration, confusion, sadness etc. – so we can easily identify with him. The Upanishadic students were highly prepared, highly intellectual – they understood life and the futility of life. They were prepared and ready for higher learning and for spiritual achievement.
The Bhagavad Gita is a song of enlightenment sung by the Lord Himself.
The Gita is looked upon by people in different ways.
(1) One group of people look upon GITA as a scripture, as a religious text to be revered, honored and worshiped -- and dharma sashtra.
(2) Other group of people looks upon Gita as a authoritative source of knowledge. Acharyas of different traditions interpret it according to their philosophical orientation and interprets the Gita to show that it supports or affirms their tradition or view. They comment upon it to authenticate the different school of thoughts and use it to support their own views. Ex. Shankaracharya.
(3) DEVOTEES- They have brought out its essence to in the light of their own knowledge and to educate people and inspire love and devotion in their hearts. E.g. . Gyaneshwar Maharaj
(4) Political leader-The Gita has inspired great political leaders and found great solace and guidance. They have also commented on Gita.
(5) Sanyasi --Many swamis also have commented on Gita. Even many house holders have also gotten fascinated with it and also have interpreted in different ways. Interpretations range from the ancient context to very modern – amazing spread. It has attracted and fascinated people from all walks of life. Philosophers, psychologists, social reformers. There is even an Urdu translation.
Any interpretation is good as long as we make use of it to progress and grow in our understanding
Here, we are going to make use of it as a manual for self unfoldment and we are going to look upon it as a book of guidance to achieve a life of fulfillment. (marg dharshak granta)
What kind of Guidance you may ask
When we look at life we need two things.
1. To be able to face our life as it comes to us - over which we have no control whatsoever. Because we don't know what kind of challenges. Difficulties, problems, fortune, misfortune, event or situation will arise?
2. To build our lives or create a meaningful, joyful and successful life – not only to go on facing life – how long will you just go on and on facing. That will get boring – so we must build and create our lives as well.
With our existing knowledge we can face some instances but there are situations/challenges when we feel confused helpless and completely out of control. We get nervous and anxious – even have a nervous breakdown. So how to face our lives and how to build our lives
We should build our life in such a way that it should be blessing to ourselves as well as to others. This is what is called fulfillment.
When we are getting ready to build our houses, we need many things but the two most important are the foundation and the material. We do soil testing and scrape out the top soil before bringing in new sand, we roll it and compact it and spray it then pour the foundation. With regards the material, we make sure it is hurricane proof, fire proof termite proof etc, etc. We are so careful about building our house. Shouldn’t we be at least this careful in building our lives?
This is where the Gita comes in. It guides us in creating the foundation ( a sound foundation of knowledge and a complete vision of life) and provides the material ( the values and virtues to be lived in life) . Now based on this foundation and these values, build a successful and a fulfilled life.
What about building our life ? GITA guides & provides us the foundation and values on which to build our lives.
Special features of GITA are
Here is a student (Arjuna) with whom we can easily identify ourselves – living, going along, making it and then one day stopped by some situation or circumstance --and such a person is enlightened by Lord Narayana himself. This conversation between God and Man on the battlefield of life – and God gave him such a knowledge that his vision of the world and his place in it changes. God removed the distortions and Arjuna’s vision became clearer. Nothing was done to the outer circumstances. The entire dialogue was aimed at producing an inner transformation. Arjuna was confused (going through nervous breakdown although he was an accomplished person) but the knowledge he received from Lord brought about an inner transformation.

Significance of Shivratri:
http://makarasankranti.blogspot.com/2008/03/mahashivratri.html
Festival of Mahashivaratri is the most important festival for the millions of devotees of Lord Shiva. The festival has been accorded lot of significance in Hindu mythology. It says that a devotee who performs sincere worship of Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Shivratri is absolved of sins and attains moksha.
Significance of Shivaratri in Hinduism:
Festival of Mahashivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism. According to sacred scriptures, ritual worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratri festival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun pleases Lord Shiva the most. This fact is said to have been declared by Lord Shiva himself, when his consort Parvati asked him as to which ritual performed by his devotees pleases him the most.
Even till date, devotees of Lord Shiva perform the ritual worship of Shivratri with care and devotion. They observe day and nigh fast and give sacred bath to Shiva Linga with honey, milk, water etc. Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on a Shivaratri as it is believed that worship of Lord Shiva with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of past sins. The devotee reaches the abode of Lord Shanker and lives there happily. He is also liberated from the cycle of birth and death and attains moksha or salvation.
Significance of Shivaratri for Women:
Mahashivratri Festival is also considered to be an extremely significant festival by women. Married and unmarried women observe fast and perform Shiva Puja with sincerity to appease Goddess Parvati who is also regarded as ‘Gaura’ - one who bestows marital bliss and long and prosperous married life. Unmarried women also pray for a husband like Lord Shiva who is regarded as the ideal husband.
Importance of Shivratri:
Shivratri is celebrated a night before ‘amavasya’ (full dark night) in the month of Magh or phalgun (February – March). The significance of Shivaratri is closely associated with ‘amavasya.’ Amavasya represents Kaliyuga. Lord Shiva appeared just before the beginning of Kaliyuga to rid the world of evil and ignorance, which is symbolically represented through Amavasya. Therefore Mahashivratri is celebrated to get rid of evil and ignorance. This Shivratri is on February 16.
On the Shivratri day, Lord Shiva is worshiped in a special form of Linga called ‘Lingodabhavamurti or Jyotirlinga.’ It is a lingam in the form of fire which has neither a beginning nor an end. It must be noted here that ‘linga’ only means ‘sign.’ And it is merely an attempt to capture the formless.
Apart from this there are numerous legends and myths associated with Shivratri. An important myth is that Shivaratri is the birthday of Lord Shiva – this is mainly because the formless Lord Shiva appeared for the first time in the form of ‘Lingodabhavamurti’ before Lord Vishnu and Brahma.
Other important myths include that of Taandava, the consummation of poison during the churning of ocean, hunter accidentally dropping the leaves of bilva, the loss of importance of ketki flower, which is now only offered during shivaratri.

Bhagwat Puran Yajna
Thur Feb 25th to Sun March 1st
Sometimes, people ask what can be found in the Bhagwatam? It is just crying and weeping and basuri blowing and gopies running. The wise say that a more apt question might be what cannot be found in the Bhagwatam.
Here are a few teasers.
(1) When Bhagwaan Krishna was getting ready to leave the earth Uddav said to him “Bhagwaan, why are you leaving? Please stay. What is going to happen if you leave? Right now, we have your roop (your form) here to inspire us to devotion and to keep us on the right path. If you leave, there is no telling what will happen.”
Bhagwaan said, “There is no question of me leaving really. Where will I go? This entire world exists in me only, but I must withdraw this form. I cannot stay in this form forever. But here is what I will do. I will leave my tejas – my glow, my power, my energy – in this Bhagwatam. You remember that, honor and revere that and you will be fine”
So, this Bhagwatam is the word form of Bhagwaan Himself. He never said any such things about any other scriptures. So the wise, when they touch this Bhagwatam, are touching Bhagwaan Krishna. When they hear the words written there, they are hearing His words. Wow- isn’t that awesome – Bhagwaan did that for us.
(2) There is this story of Narad Muni reciting all the Vedas and the shastras, the Upanishads, the different different Strotram etc. to two sick sons to revive them, but nothing doing. He was getting frustrated and anxious and then he had a conversation with the SanatKumars – the first four mind born sons of BrahmaJi (side note: satsang – the association with good people is the best. Sometimes, the answer is inside of us but we may forget it. Association with good people will help us to bring it out).
The Sanatkumars said oh NaradJi, you yourself had told VyaasJi to write the Bhagwatam. How could you forget the glory and greatness of the Bhagwatam? All the other scriptures, you have to read and study and reflect, practice and then something will happen you’re your duty, do some tapas, do some penance. With this Bhagwatam, if you just listen with devotion from a qualified teacher, then that alone is enough for trapping Bhagwaan in your heart. Nothing to do. Nothing to practice.
So, here we have it in brief, just by listening to the Bhagawatam with devotion from a qualified teacher is enough. This has never been said (in the scriptures) about any of the other scriptures. Such is the greatness of the Bhagawatam
(3) One more thing, Narad said, “This Bhagawatam is the Vedas - nothing other than the essence of the Vedas is written in this story form. I do not see the difference.” The SantaKumars said “Oh Narad, look at a mongo tree, the fruit, the mango, is nothing but the essence of that tree. The essence of the tree is the same regardless of which part of the tree you are talking about, so why don’t you eat the stem rather than the mango. Oh Narad, the tree is made up of the Vedas, the branches and leaves are the sastras etc. that you spoke about, the Bhagwatam is the fruit – and it is the ripe fruit that was tasted by the parrot - the best.” So the Santakumars said “drink that fruit.” Very interesting – we normally eat that fruit, but here it is said to drink it. All other fruits have skin and seeds and pulp or some part that is to be discarded. Here this fruit (the Shrimad Bhagwatam) has no such part. It is nothing but juice. Actually, the juice itself is like nectar.”
Can you get it? This fruit of the Bhagawatam is nothing but juice – no skin, no seed, no pulp – all juice to drink and drink and drink.
Brahmachari Girish Chaitanya will be coming to conduct this Yagna. GirishJiis the resident acharya of Chinmaya Mission Austin. Before that, he was the acharya at Chinmaya Mission Los Angeles for four years.
