SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In 2004, local leadership, group organization, and savings and credit were strengthened in order to achieve self-reliance. Group activities included health, family planning, food production, literacy, income generation and drinking water systems. Despite major challenges posed by unusual flooding in Nepal and the Maoist insurgency, significant progress was made in the following areas:

· Group membership in villages supported by World Neighbors and its partners continued to expand, with the majority of members being women.

· A significant increase in savings and credit activities was achieved by these groups, which improved the self-reliance and food security of members. Many group members indicated that they had ended or greatly reduced their dependence on exploitative local moneylenders and are escaping bonded labor.

· Group members progressed in improving their reproductive health in each of the following areas:
- Family planning acceptance.
- Pregnant women receiving at least two ante-natal and post-natal check-ups.
- Number of women giving birth attended by a trained medical person (an auxiliary nurse-midwife, a trained village midwife, or a doctor).
- Use of clinical reproductive health services to treat sexually transmitted infections and uterine prolapse.
- Adolescents more aware of key reproductive health issues, including prevention and transmission of HIV/AIDS.

· In agriculture, group members increased their adoption of composting, tree planting, vegetable production and better animal rearing practices.

· Communities continued to construct gravity-flow water systems and water-sealed latrines, and women reduced the time they spend to fetch water from 90 minutes per trip to less than 15 minutes.

· Significant increases in adolescent awareness of HIV/AIDS and prevention of sexually transmitted disease were achieved throughout the school system.

· Many women noted positive changes in their involvement in decision-making in the household and the community and now protest violence against women.
